49. life in Mcleoud Ganj

Snippets of life here.................

Tsangmo, the 9 year old at my homestay shows me her homework - beautiful tibetan writing.   She's addicted to computer games and hogs the laptop, with TV on at the same time - ghastly bollywood type stuff, some horribly violent.  BBC world news excellent.

the best thing I brought was a dressing gown!  and not just for putting on over PJs............its great over everything else too!  its been cold - and very wet - enough to get me down but my standard of living and resultant happiness has shot through the roof with the acquisition of a kettle and borrowed hot water bottle.

As for occupation,  I'm going to be editing the Lha mag  - just what I like doing as it provides an excuse to be in the centre of things and involves networking, writing, finding out things and generally nosing around - check it out on: http://contactmagazine.net/

Its fun exploring and finding the places to eat and hang out - the quest is to find cheap, good food (easy) with wifi (easy), a good loo (difficult), WARMTH (essential) and, personally, I like to avoid "the self-developers" (Stacey's term - she's at Lha) which can be difficult as they are adept at finding the best places in town.  Mind you, they are tending to leave now its colder.  Lots of people are leaving, only the hardy faithful stay the winter.............................

Current mission is to find a place to stay after the homestay (11 more days to go, not that I'm counting) and its interesting what you get for your 500 rupees or so (under £6 a night) - a view, sun, balcony and wifi are all possible, but not usually together.  Stacey took me to see her place last night, its beautiful, out of town and walking through the pines we listened to the chatter of the monkeys and revelled in the space and mountains and view of lights all across the hillside.
