12. street parties and communal cars

Our street has got to be one of the best streets to live in!  We are 2 minutes from the town centre with its street market, delightful shops and pubs and castle and church, everybody saying good morning as they pass on the street, and 2 minutes from lovely woods and gorgeous trees and fresh air and space.  What could be better?

And we have street parties (sometimes even with Morris men giving us our own private performance in exchange for beer and burgers) and Christmas dinners, we lurk about in the street and gossip over our plant pots, sometimes we pile into each others houses and drink and laugh and put the world to rights.

And now, one of our residents has started showing films in her garden.  What more delightful way to spend an evening than sitting with friends in a lovely garden, on a beautiful warm summer evening, watching the sun going down, drinking wine, eating naughty nibbles, and watching a wonderful old film?  We watched Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid" which made us weak with laughter and astounded by the superb film making.  What a treat!

And we are getting a Car Club in our town!  I have never regretted selling my car, finding that my bike and the train, plus occasional car hire and taxi, meets nearly all my transport needs.  But there are also lots of lovely things to do around here in the villages and access to a car will mean I can get to them, and offer lifts back to all the lovely people who have been ferrying me around for the last couple of years.
